The Fantasticks

The Fantasticks is a simple story - a parable of love. The time is then. The scene is moonlight then sunlight. There is a boy and a girl, their fathers and a wall. The wall, erected by the seemingly feuding fathers, keeps the boy (Matt) and the girl (Louisa) apart. They must climb trees, secretly meeting high among the branches to kindle their youthful love into a romantic blaze. In reality, their fathers are the best of friends and have instigated a mock feud to get their children to fall in love reverse psychology at its most heavy-handed. The fathers go so far as to hire a roving bandit named El Gallo to stage a mock abduction of Louisa by moonlight, so that Matt may save her. Thereby the boy wins her hand and permission to marry from the eternally grateful and now reconciled fathers. The moonlit escapade goes off as planned and what would normally have been the happily-ever-after ending of most fairy tales becomes the beginning of something more. The next day under the bright and disillusioning light of the sun, the young lovers grow irritated with each other finding fault with small, everyday things. They yearn for the dangerous attractions of El Gallo's outside world and part company to try them. After more adventures, the two wind up with a new perspective on the emotion they first sought in the tops of trees.
