The Last Ten Miles of Avery J. Coping
Ravaged by Parkinson's disease, former Merchant Marine and world traveler Avery J. Coping now finds himself "back home" in the desolate and dried up town of Rock City, Kansas (population 27). Avery is trapped by both illness and circumstance since his sister, Cornelia, took on the task of "caring" for him. Domineering by design, Cornelia rules her roost and everyone who enters it, especially her long-suffering daughter, Bartha.
Despite his physical limitations, Avery manages to fight Cornelia's effort to strip him of his pride, dignity and independence through clever and poignant acts of defiance. Unfortunately, Avery's efforts fail to undermine Cornelia's controlling nature.
However, when grandson, Scottie, arrives in town, he triggers a chain of events that unravels Cornelia's tightly wound world.
