Don't Drink the Water
by Woody Allen
Our play takes place inside an American embassy behind the Iron Curtain. A vacationing American tourist, a caterer by trade, and his family of wife and daughter rush into the embassy two steps ahead of the gun-wielding, communist secret police, who suspect them of spying and picture-taking. What kind of vacation is this? But the embassy is not much of a refuge, for the ambassador is absent and his inept son, who has been expelled from a dozen countries embassies and the continent of Africa, is now in charge. This is his last chance to prove his leadership qualities. Adding to the grim situation is another refugee, a priest who has been unable to escape the safety of the embassy for the last six years. Things look hopeless. Nevertheless, they carefully and frantically plot their escape, dodging the secret police, bullets and a crowd of communist protesters that have surrounded the embassy.
Add a little romance, toss gently, and sit back to a giant serving of fast paced comedy.
