The Ballad of Gopher Gap

The audience can cheer the hero and boo the villain when "The Ballad of Gopher Gap" is performed Friday and Saturday nights at the Holiday Inn in Effingham.

Fine Arts, County of Eff ingham, will present the melodrama written by Tim Kelly at 8 each evening. Admission is $4 at the door; no advance tickets will be sold. Free popcorn will be available for those who attend.

The two-act play is set in the Arizona Territory when mining was drawing many people seeking quick fortunes to the Wild West. Bunco De Sneer has set up a con game, luring gullible Easterners to invest in his mine. With the help of his accomplices, Flora Fourflusher and Slats, De Sneer fleeces unsuspecting investors when they get off the stage in the town Gopher Gap. In addition, the villain plans to trick the owner of the town to keep his scheme going.

Mike Hindman portrays Bunco De Sneer, Kathy Kelly plays Flora Fourflusher and Frank Schoonover is Slats.

Carrie Sanderson plays the heroine, VerlindaSpringblossom. Rocky Romantic, the hero and Verlinda's self-appointed protector, is portrayed by Tim Davis.

Christopher Kade, Ginger Colbert and Barb Kelley are cast as Easterners who want to invest in the mine. Linda Marxman is a newspaperwoman who shows up to do a story about De Sneer.

Rounding out the cast are Dan Atkins and Laurie Arnold.

The melodrama is directed by Bob Cox.
