Bleacher Bums

Wrigley field's bleachers will be recreated at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Effingham, May 18 and 19, when the Fine Arts, County of Effingham (F.A.C.E.) presents "Bleacher Bums".

The play follows the activities of some die-hard Cub fans during a game with the Cards. The fans include a rabid cheerleader, a blind man who follows the game on the radio, a bathing beauty, professional gambler, a typical "nerd", and various other bleacher denizens.

The show will begin at 8 p.m. both nights. Tickets, $4 for adults and $2 for children, will be available at the door or in advance by calling Judy Willenborg.

As the entire Cubs-Cards game is played, we watch the bleacher bums place bets on every conceivable aspect of the game, go out for frosty malts or beers, try to pick up the bathing beauty and occasionally pay attention to the game.

The cast members include Mike Hindman, Leonard Lane, Linda Hankins, Dick Russell, Larry Marshall, Mike Sehy, Frank Schoonover, Kathy Lane, Bob Cox, John Latta and Jenny Lane. It is being directed by Wendy Dust, with sets and lights by Russ Kelley.

"Bleacher Bums" was conceived in 1977 by the Organic Theater Company of Chicago. Although the play deals with a regionalized subject, it has enjoyed nationwide popularity. "Bleacher Bums" is a joyous look at our national pastime and those undaunted fans that root for the home team.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children. They are available at the door or in advance by calling Judy Willenborg. FACE is presenting "Bleacher Bums" by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc.
