Arsenic and Old Lace
Originally written as a drama, "Arsenic and Old Lace" premiered on Broadway in 1941 and featured Josephine Hull and Boris Karloff in the cast. "The author thought he was really writing a serious murder mystery," said Bob Cox, director of the Effingham production. According to Cox, when the producers first read the play, they couldn't stop laughing.
The story deals with Abby and Martha Brewster (played by Judy Willenborg and Ginger Colbert), two women who, in their, own kind way, put men out of their misery by serving them elderberry wine made with a teaspoon of arsenic and l/2 teaspoon of strychnine. "The aunts are very sweet and do all kinds of charity work," said Cox, "including poisoning old men and burying them in the basement." The women's nephew, Mortimer (played by Kent Brown), a New York theater critic, stumbles on to their "secret" and spends the rest of the play trying to cover for them. The plot is complicated by the arrival of Mortimer's brother, Jonathan (Paul J. Evans) a wanted murderer, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Boris Karloff; his companion, Dr. Einstein (Michael Sehy) and their friend, Mr. Spinalzo, a dead body.
Also adding to the confusion are Teddy (Bill Griffith), Mortimer's brother, who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt and spends his time charging "San Juan Hill" and digging "locks" in the cellar for his aunts' "yellow fever" victims; Officer O'Hara (Ken Huebner), a policeman trying to get Mortimer to write a play with him and Elaine Harper (Cindy Borsch), Mortimer's fiancee and the only sane one in the crowd.
Work for the play begin in January, although the recent snowstorm played havoc with rehearsals and gave the company little time to construct the set. Thursday night was the first time the cast was able to rehearse on the stage. "We had a lot of cancelled rehearsals the last couple weeks," said Cox. "but we got a chance to rehearse between the fog and snow and ice.
Cox was pleased with the work and effort made by the people involved with the play. "I'm really pleased with the cast," he said. "They're really gung-ho. Everyone seems to enjoy it."
"Arsenic and Old Lace" will be presented Friday and Saturday. Tickets for the play are $10.
